If Carl Sagan were alive in 2026, what would he ask an AI? 10 questions about extraterrestrial life, consciousness, civilisation, the cosmos, and humanity's place in it.
Carl Sagan would probably use AI to look outward — and then turn the answers back toward humanity.
He would ask whether we are alone. How civilisations survive technological adolescence. What intelligent life might look like elsewhere. Whether consciousness is common or extraordinarily rare. And what happens when a species becomes capable of changing its entire planet before it becomes wise enough to understand the consequences.
Sagan's great gift was making the cosmic feel personal. He could take an unimaginably large universe and turn it into a question about a single human life. AI would give him an extraordinary new telescope — and he would probably point it at Earth.

Given everything we currently know, how likely is it that intelligent life exists elsewhere?
Not whether extraterrestrial life is possible — that is plausible at some biological level. The harder question is whether technological civilisations exist elsewhere now. The universe contains an extraordinary number of stars and planets, but the distance between possibility and evidence remains enormous, and Sagan would insist on keeping that distinction visible.
If a civilisation were a million years older than ours, what might its intelligence look like?
Would it still have biological bodies? Use language? Exist primarily as machines, distributed across a planet or a solar system? We tend to search for civilisations that resemble us. That may be exactly the wrong strategy.
If you had one telescope and one target, where would you point it?
Sagan would want a reason — not the most interesting target, but the one where the probability of learning something transformative is greatest. Science is partly the art of deciding where to look.

Is consciousness an inevitable consequence of complex information processing, or an accident of biology?
This reaches well beyond astronomy. If consciousness is common, the universe could contain countless subjective experiences; if it is rare, our existence becomes far stranger. AI sharpens the question, because humans now build systems that imitate the external characteristics of intelligence — and imitation is not experience.
If humanity survives another million years, what should we hope it becomes?
Not richer. Not more powerful. Not merely more advanced. What does a civilisation ultimately optimise for — knowledge, exploration, creativity, peace, conscious experience? The question may be unanswerable without first deciding what we value.

Sagan's achievement wasn't simply making astronomy popular. He changed the emotional scale of science — he could make billions of stars feel intimate, and the age of the universe feel personally relevant.
He also understood something that matters more in the age of AI: knowledge does not automatically produce wisdom. Humanity can build extraordinarily powerful technologies while remaining uncertain about what those technologies should serve.
AI may help us search for extraterrestrial civilisations, decode signals, model planetary atmospheres, and hunt for biosignatures. It may one day help us recognise evidence of intelligence somewhere else entirely.
But discovering another civilisation would raise a question no algorithm can answer for us: what kind of civilisation do we want to be? Perhaps that is Sagan's real question for this era — not "are we alone?" but "if we're not, what will we have to say about ourselves?"
