If Lionel Messi were given an AI that could analyze every match, movement and decision in football history, what would he ask? 25 questions about instinct, perfection, pressure, and the science of becoming better.
If Lionel Messi had access to a powerful AI as a private football thinking partner, he probably wouldn't begin by asking who the greatest player of all time is, or how many goals he might score next season. He would ask questions about the game itself.
Where does an opponent's defensive structure break? Why does one movement create space while another closes it? Can instinct be measured? Can creativity be trained? And perhaps most importantly: can AI help a player understand something the player already knows instinctively?
That is what makes Messi such an interesting person to place inside this series. His career has been defined not simply by physical ability, but by perception, timing, anticipation, and an almost extraordinary relationship with space.

The thought experiment carries a particular weight in 2026. Messi's father and lifelong agent, Jorge Messi, died on 8 August 2026 at the age of 68. Days later Messi wrote publicly that he had "a fair few doubts" about whether he would continue playing much longer — not a retirement announcement, but an unusually candid uncertainty from a player who has spent his entire life inside the game.
Which makes the question sharper. What would one of football's greatest practitioners ask a machine that could analyse the game entirely from the outside? Perhaps not "how can I become better?" Perhaps: "What am I seeing that nobody else sees?"

Underneath that simplicity is an enormous system of positioning, probability, psychology, timing, fatigue, and decision-making. The Question Messi Might Ask Last
“Can you tell me what made me love football before I knew I was going to be good at it?”
After analysing every match, every touch, every opponent and every mistake, Messi might arrive at a question with almost nothing to do with statistics. Because that may be the one thing no dataset can fully explain. Before the records, before the trophies, before the millions watching — there was a child and a ball.
Messi is an interesting person to place in an AI conversation because his greatness has always existed at the intersection of calculation and instinct. A tracking system can tell you where a player was; it may not tell you why he went there.
