What Would Steve Jobs Ask ChatGPT?

If Steve Jobs were alive in 2026, what would he ask an AI? 25 questions about creativity, design, taste, simplicity, human potential, and the future of computing.

If Steve Jobs were alive in 2026 and sat down in front of ChatGPT, he probably wouldn't ask whether it was intelligent. He would ask what people could make with it.

That distinction ran through everything Jobs built. The Apple II, the Macintosh, Pixar, the iPhone — none of them were interesting to him as feats of engineering. They were interesting as instruments: things ordinary people could pick up and use to think, create, and communicate in ways they couldn't before. He famously located Apple at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts, and he judged every product by what happened at that intersection — not by what the specification sheet said.

Jobs's career — personal computing, computer animation, the smartphone — makes him an unusually interesting hypothetical conversation partner for a modern AI system, precisely because he was the most influential technologist of his era who never wrote the code. His genius was editorial: knowing what mattered, what didn't, and what to leave out.

AI would hand Jobs the raw material he spent his whole life shaping — a general-purpose capability, astonishing and shapeless, waiting for someone to decide what it is for.

So what would he ask?

If Steve Jobs were alive today, he might ask ChatGPT questions about creativity, taste, design, simplicity, and what technology should actually do for the people who use it. We cannot know exactly what he would ask — the 25 questions below are speculative, grounded in the obsessions that defined his work: subtraction, intuition, the marriage of technology with the humanities, and the belief that tools should amplify human potential rather than replace it.

Part One

What is technology actually for?

Jobs never treated technology as the point. It was always the means — and he was scathing about products that forgot this. His first questions to an AI would not be about the AI. They would be about the people on the other side of it.

What problem in an ordinary person's day deserves the most extraordinary technology ever built?

Jobs's instinct was always to aim the most advanced technology at the most mundane moments — a family photo, a phone call, a song. The gap between how sophisticated AI is and how ordinary its best use might be would fascinate him.

What do people actually do with you all day — and what does that reveal about what they need?

Not what the marketing says. Not what the demos show. The real, unglamorous usage. Jobs believed watching real behavior told you more than any focus group, and an AI system sits on an unprecedented view of what people genuinely struggle with.

Why do most technology products fail the people who use them?

He had a standing answer — companies ship their org charts, engineers design for themselves, features accumulate because nobody has the authority to say no. He would want to know whether AI products are repeating every one of those mistakes at higher speed.

Name one technology that made people more human, and one that made them less. What separated them?

This is the question underneath the bicycle metaphor, the iPod, the iPad. The dividing line — whether a tool amplifies a person's own capability or substitutes for it — would be the lens through which he judged everything AI does.

People don't know what they want until you show them. So show me something I don't know I want.

Jobs distrusted asking customers what to build. An AI trained on everything people have already said they want is, in a sense, the world's largest focus group — which is exactly why he would test whether it could ever produce the thing no one asked for.

Can AI have taste?

Jobs's sharpest criticisms of competitors were never about capability. They were about taste — the trained judgment that comes from exposing yourself to the best things human beings have made, and then bringing that judgment into what you build. This is the part of the conversation where he would push hardest.

Can an AI understand why something is beautiful?

Not describe it. Not classify it. Understand it — the way a person stands in front of a building or holds an object and simply knows. Jobs would want to know whether that knowing is computable, or whether it belongs to beings who live in bodies and die.

What is the difference between a choice made from data and a choice made from taste?

Data tells you what people preferred yesterday. Taste tells you what they will love tomorrow. Jobs would press an AI on which of the two it is actually doing — and whether averaging over everything humanity has made can ever produce a point of view.

You have read everything ever written about design. Why can't you feel a great one?

An AI has absorbed every design manifesto, every critique, every retrospective. Jobs would find it fascinating — and maybe damning — that all of that reading may still not add up to the thing a great designer has in their hands.

Here are two typefaces. Don't describe them — judge them. Which is better, and what does your answer reveal about you?

Jobs audited calligraphy at Reed College and carried it into the Macintosh. Asking a machine to actually commit to an aesthetic judgment — and defend it — would tell him more about the nature of AI than any benchmark.

Where does intuition come from, if not from computation?

Jobs trusted intuition over analysis and said so plainly. If an AI could explain what intuition is made of — compressed experience, embodied pattern-matching, something else entirely — it would either demystify his greatest tool or prove it was never mystical at all.

What should we remove?

Focus, for Jobs, was not about what you do. It was about what you refuse to do — he was as proud of the products Apple didn't ship as the ones it did. Faced with the most feature-rich technology in history, his instinct would be to start deleting.

If you had to remove 90 percent of the features from modern AI, what would you keep?

This is the purest Jobs question in the series. Strip away the plugins, the modes, the settings, the options. What is the one capability that matters — the thing everything else is noise around?

What is the AI equivalent of saying no a thousand times?

When Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, he cut the product line to four machines. He would ask what the equivalent act of subtraction looks like for AI — which thousand plausible things must be refused for the one essential thing to become great.

What should an AI refuse to do — not because it can't, but because doing it would make the product worse?

Restraint as a design principle, not a safety checkbox. Jobs would want to know whether AI builders have the discipline to leave capability on the table when using it would damage the experience, the user, or the trust between them.

Simplicity is harder than complexity. What is the simplest possible interface to intelligence?

Jobs spent his career collapsing interfaces — command line to mouse, keyboard to touch. A chat box full of prompts would strike him as a beginning, not an answer. What comes after typing at the machine?

What would you remove from yourself?

Perhaps the strangest subtraction question of all: asking the machine to apply the discipline of focus to its own design. What an AI identifies as its own inessential parts would reveal what it believes it is for.

The computer as a bicycle for the mind

Jobs loved a study he'd read comparing the locomotion efficiency of species: the condor beat the human — until the human got on a bicycle, and left everything else behind. The computer, he said, was a bicycle for the mind. The question is whether AI still is.

Are you a bicycle for the mind, or a chauffeur for it?

A bicycle multiplies your own effort. A chauffeur moves you while you sit still. The entire debate about AI and human capability compresses into which of these two machines an AI has decided to be.

When does a tool amplify a person, and when does it replace the effort that made them grow?

The bicycle makes you faster, but you still pedal. Jobs would want to know where the line is — the point at which assistance quietly becomes substitution, and the rider forgets how to move on their own.

If technology becomes invisible, what should remain visible?

Jobs pushed technology toward disappearance — the device becoming a pane of glass, the interface becoming a gesture. If AI dissolves into everything, he would ask what must stay visible: the seams, the authorship, the moment where a human chose.

What would a computer look like if it were designed to make people smarter rather than busier?

He watched the personal computer become a productivity treadmill. Given a technology that can absorb any amount of busywork, the question turns sharp: does the reclaimed time make people more capable — or just more consumed?

How would you redesign yourself so that using you feels like riding, not being carried?

The constructive version of every question in this part: an actual product brief, issued to the product itself. Jobs rarely asked whether something was possible. He asked what it should feel like.

Part Five

What happens when everyone can create?

Jobs put creative tools into ordinary hands his entire career — desktop publishing, digital video, a movie studio in your pocket. AI is the largest expansion of creative capability since any of those. He would find it thrilling. He would also find it suspicious.

If AI can generate almost anything, what becomes the difference between a creator and a consumer?

When making something requires only asking for it, the line between the two blurs. Jobs would want to know what remains on the creator's side of the line — intention, editing, taste, the willingness to say "not this" a hundred times.

When everyone can make a film, an album, an app — what will distinguish the ones that matter?

Desktop publishing produced a flood of ugly newsletters and, eventually, a generation of great designers. Jobs would ask what the AI version of that arc looks like, and how long the flood phase lasts.

Does lowering the cost of making things lower the value of making them?

Jobs priced craftsmanship into everything Apple made. If creation becomes nearly free, he would push on whether scarcity was ever the source of value at all — or whether care was, and care cannot be generated.

What tool would you put in the hands of every ten-year-old on Earth — and what would you keep away from them?

Jobs saw computers in classrooms decades before it was policy. The second half of the question is the part he would insist on: a great toolmaker knows the difference between empowering a child and outsourcing their childhood.

A great product is a promise about what matters. What promise should AI make to the people who use it?

Every Apple product implied a worldview: your time matters, your work deserves beautiful tools, you are not a market segment. Jobs would demand to know what AI's implicit promise is — and whether anyone building it has bothered to decide.

He wouldn't ask what AI can do. He would ask what it is for.

The Question Jobs Might Ask Last

“If technology can give every human extraordinary power, what should we make sure it never takes away?”

Einstein's imagined conversation with AI was about the nature of reality. Jobs's would be about the nature of us.

Nearly every question he might ask circles the same conviction: technology is judged by what it does to the people who use it — to their capability, their taste, their attention, their sense of being the author of their own work. Power was never the interesting part. The interesting part was what the power was pointed at.

That may be what this imagined conversation reveals most clearly. The people building AI have inherited Jobs's tools and his ambition. The open question is whether they inherited his editor's instinct — the discipline to decide, out of everything this technology can do, the few things it truly should.
