Gemini Code Assist Review: Google Has Stopped Selling It

Google ended new Gemini Code Assist subscriptions on 9 October 2026 and says auto-renewal ends in 2027. For anyone choosing a coding assistant today, that settles most of the question.

AI Overview

Gemini Code Assist is Google's coding assistant for supported IDEs and Google Cloud tools, with code completion, chat, a preview agent mode and licensed access to the Gemini CLI. As of 9 October 2026 Google no longer sells new Standard or Enterprise subscriptions, and auto-renewal of existing ones ends in 2027. The free individuals tier stopped serving requests on 18 June 2026. Google suggests Antigravity via Gemini Enterprise as the replacement. This review rests on release notes, pricing pages and press reports, not hands-on tests.

In Short

  • What it is: Google's IDE coding assistant, now in wind-down.
  • Best for: existing licence holders who need time to migrate.
  • Main risk: a published end of sales and renewals with unclear migration.
  • Price: about $19 to $23 a month (Standard), $45 to $54 (Enterprise), by our arithmetic.
  • Our rating: 3 out of 10, editorial judgment, not a test score.

Why It Matters

Most coding-assistant coverage asks which tool is best. For Gemini Code Assist the useful question is how a vendor retires one. The dates below show a staged exit over four months, which is a practical warning for anyone building a workflow on a single vendor's assistant. It also fits the wider pattern in the AI coding tools landscape, where tools are consolidating quickly.

The Wind-Down, Dated

Dates are from Google's release notes unless noted.

DateEvent
2026-05-20The Register reports Google nudging developers from Gemini CLI to Antigravity
2026-06-08Gemini 3.5 Flash generally available in the IDE extensions
2026-06-18IDE extensions and Gemini CLI "stopped serving requests" for the free individuals tier and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers
2026-08-20First-month credits discontinued for new customers
2026-09-04Billing accounts without a subscription could no longer buy one in the console
2026-10-09New Standard and Enterprise subscriptions can no longer be purchased; existing ones auto-renew through 2026, "but auto-renewal will end in 2027"
2026-10-16TechInformed reports renewal deadlines

TechInformed reports annual plans can auto-renew until 31 January 2027 and monthly plans until 31 December 2027, and that no service shutdown date has been given. That is a secondary source; confirm against Google's notice. The product page still showed "Try it now" and "Buy Code Assist" when checked, which conflicts with the end-of-sale notice.

What Users Reported

None of these are our tests.

  • Anger over the CLI shutdown. The Register reported developers found the replacement Antigravity CLI "far less open", with commenters hitting weekly quotas "with just a couple of requests". Google acknowledged there "won't be 1:1 feature parity right out of the gate".
  • Cut off mid-session. One Google AI Pro subscriber reported a 403 error mid-session on 18 June. This is a single user report.
  • Enterprise users kept going. In another thread, one user moved to their organization's Enterprise licence and kept using Gemini CLI; another used a whole weekly Antigravity allowance in 15 minutes.

Pricing

Verified against Google's pricing page on 22 October 2026. Google shows per-licence-hour rates, and the monthly figures are our arithmetic. New subscriptions cannot be bought.

EditionMonthly commitment12-month commitment
Standard$0.031232877 an hour (about $22.80 a month)$0.026027397 an hour (about $19.00 a month)
Enterprise$0.073972603 an hour (about $54.00 a month)$0.061643836 an hour (about $45.00 a month)

Which plan to pick (editorial view): new buyers should pick neither and evaluate alternatives. Existing Standard customers can keep the plan while they trial a replacement. Enterprise customers using code customization or Apigee should ask Google in writing what carries over before the final renewal.

Data and Security

Google's data governance page says Gemini "doesn't use your prompts or its responses as data to train its models" and that data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Google's services-in-scope listing, last modified 28 September 2026, lists Gemini Code Assist as in scope for ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, the SOC 1, 2 and 3 reports, PCI DSS and penetration testing. The reports themselves are gated.

In short, Copilot is the nearest broadly available replacement, and it offers Gemini models too. That is an editorial reading.

The Exit-Ramp Playbook

When a vendor retires a tool in stages, the cheapest move is to plan your exit before the last date. Find your renewal date and term type; buy any extra seats before the reported 31 January 2027 cutoff; list the Enterprise-only features you rely on; trial a replacement on your own repositories; and ask Google how customization indexes and logs are deleted at contract end. TechInformed notes Google has not said whether code-customization settings carry over to Antigravity.

Limitations

  • Not tested. Ratings are editorial judgment, and running tests would now require an existing licence.
  • Secondary renewal dates. The 2027 cutoffs come from TechInformed, not Google.
  • Single-user anecdotes. The Reddit reports are individual experiences.

Do not start on Gemini Code Assist now. Existing customers can keep it while they migrate. A reversal of the end-of-sale decision would change this view.
