Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so.

Consistent with the whole configuration — the inclined plane, the telescope, the pendulum are all ways of making the unmeasurable measurable. The advice omits the second half of his method, which was to publish the measurement where the people who disagreed could not ignore it, and that half is what cost him his freedom.
