Identity
Born in Pisa in 1564, the eldest child of Vincenzo Galilei, a lutenist and music theorist who conducted experiments on the tension and pitch of strings; Galileo began a medical degree at the University of Pisa before switching to mathematics, and left without completing a degree. (Wikipedia, 2026)
The inheritance is not a subject but a habit: a father who tested received musical theory against measurable string behaviour. The son applied the same move to falling bodies and the heavens. The configuration begins as a family method for disagreeing with authorities by measuring things.
The only subject in this series whose empirical method was literally inherited from a parent's experimental practice in an unrelated field — the physics was music theory pointed at a different object.
Trajectory
He held the chair of mathematics at Pisa from 1589 and at Padua from 1592 to 1610, supplementing his salary by tutoring and by making and selling instruments; in 1610 he left academia for the court of the Medici in Florence as Chief Mathematician and Philosopher to the Grand Duke, a position won on the strength of his telescopic discoveries. The shape is a single leap: eighteen years of underpaid teaching and instrument-making, then one publication that converted a provincial professor into a court celebrity within a year. The trajectory is not compounding but a step function, triggered by a tool.
Unlike Newton, whose breakthroughs were hoarded for decades, Galileo converted his discoveries into career capital within months — Sidereus Nuncius was published in March 1610 and the Medici appointment followed that year.

Business Model
His income combined university salary, private tuition, the manufacture and sale of instruments including a geometric and military compass, and from 1610 Medici patronage; he named the moons of Jupiter the "Medicean Stars" in the dedication of Sidereus Nuncius, securing the Florentine appointment. This is the only profile in the series where the scientist runs a small manufacturing business on the side and then executes a deliberate naming-rights deal. The moons were real; calling them Medicean was a sponsorship. He understood that discovery had to be packaged for whoever could pay for the next one.
Where da Vinci converted patronage into unpublished notebooks, Galileo converted discoveries into patronage — the direction of the exchange is reversed, and it made him the first working scientist with something like a personal brand.
Impact
With his telescope he observed the phases of Venus, mountains and craters on the Moon, four satellites of Jupiter and the resolution of the Milky Way into individual stars; Two New Sciences, published in 1638, laid out his work on the motion of falling bodies and projectiles and on the strength of materials, which became foundational for classical mechanics. The impact is a change in the standard of evidence. Jupiter's moons did not prove heliocentrism, but they proved that not everything orbits the Earth — and that a person with a tube of glass could see something Aristotle had not. After 1610 an argument from authority could be answered with an instrument.
Newton unified the physics; Galileo changed who was allowed to do physics — anyone with a good enough instrument — and that shift in the admissible evidence outlasted any single result.

Cognition
His work on motion relied on experiment and idealized reasoning — rolling balls down inclined planes to slow acceleration to a measurable rate, and thought experiments on bodies falling in the absence of resistance; he wrote that the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics. The characteristic move is to slow a phenomenon down until it can be measured, then extrapolate to the limit where it cannot. The inclined plane is a decelerated fall; the frictionless thought experiment is the idealized version. Measurement and idealization run together, and both are aimed at replacing a qualitative authority with a number.
Where Newton built new mathematics to describe the world, Galileo built new apparatus to make the world describable — the instrument, not the equation, is the cognitive signature.
Behavior
He wrote the Dialogue in Italian rather than Latin, making it accessible beyond the scholarly community, and cast the defender of the Aristotelian position as a character named Simplicio; he engaged in sustained and often sarcastic polemics with rivals, including Jesuit astronomers. The behavioral signature is deliberate provocation through reach. Writing in the vernacular was a distribution decision: it took the argument out of the hands of the people qualified to suppress it and put it in front of everyone else. Naming the opposing voice "Simpleton" was the same move in one word.
Every other subject here who fought an establishment did so in private or through lawyers; Galileo did it in a bestseller, in the popular language, with the establishment's position voiced by a character whose name was an insult.
Decision Architecture
After the 1616 injunction against defending heliocentrism he waited sixteen years, obtained ecclesiastical permission to publish a supposedly balanced treatment, and then produced the Dialogue, which was widely read as a defence of Copernicus; he was summoned to Rome, tried, and in 1633 abjured under threat and was sentenced to house arrest. The architecture is an escalation ladder with no exit. Each step — the permission, the ostensible balance, the vernacular, the Simplicio device — was individually defensible and collectively unmistakable. He structured the book to be deniable and wrote it to be undeniable, and the institution read it correctly.
Musk treats market prices as falsifiable claims; Galileo treated the Church's cosmology as one, and unlike every subject here the counterparty had the power to end his career by decree — and did.

Personality
He never married but had three children with Marina Gamba; he placed both daughters in a convent, and maintained a close correspondence with the elder, Maria Celeste, until her death in 1634; contemporaries describe him as combative, witty and fond of argument. (Wikipedia, 2026)
The temperament is sociable and pugnacious — the opposite pole from Newton. He needed an audience and an opponent, and the science was partly a performance for both. The same appetite that produced the Dialogue's wit produced the enemies who prosecuted it.
Among the three scientists in this series, Galileo is the only extrovert — his method required readers and adversaries in a way that Newton's seclusion and Curie's laboratory discipline did not.
Power & Influence
He held no institutional office beyond his court appointment and depended on the protection of the Medici and, for a time, the goodwill of Pope Urban VIII, a former admirer; when that goodwill was lost after the Dialogue appeared to mock the Pope's own argument through Simplicio, no patron was able to shield him from trial. Influence was entirely borrowed and personal — a duke's favour, a pope's friendship — and it evaporated the moment he embarrassed the lender. He had enormous reach and no power, which is exactly the configuration that a powerful institution can crush without cost.
Newton captured the institutions that judged him; Galileo antagonized the one that judged him while holding no position inside it — the power layer is the inverse of No. 013.
Value System
In his 1615 letter to the Grand Duchess Christina he argued that scripture and nature could not contradict each other and that where scripture appeared to conflict with demonstrated natural fact, scripture should be reinterpreted; he remained a practising Catholic throughout his life. The value is that observation has priority over text — not that text is false, but that it must yield when the instrument disagrees. He was trying to reform the institution's reading rules from inside it, which is a more dangerous position than simple opposition because it claims the authority to reinterpret.
The only subject in this series whose central value was articulated as an explicit rule for resolving conflicts between evidence and authority — and who was then convicted under the authority he had proposed to reinterpret.

Friction & Constraints
The Dialogue was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, where it remained until 1835; he spent the final nine years of his life under house arrest at Arcetri, went blind by 1638, and was denied permission to be buried in the main body of the Basilica of Santa Croce. The binding constraint was institutional power he could provoke but not survive. Yet the constraint did not stop the output: Two New Sciences, the most durable of his books, was written under house arrest and smuggled to a Protestant printer. Confinement removed his audience and left his method intact.
The only subject here whose most important scientific work was completed while a prisoner of the institution his previous work had provoked.
Public Perception

The legacy hypothesis is procedural: not a result but a sequence — build the instrument, look, measure, publish for everyone, accept the fight. Every subsequent scientist inherits that loop whether or not they have read him, and every modern founder who ships a demo and dares the incumbents to respond is running a version of it.
Newton is remembered for the answer; Galileo is remembered for the procedure — the only legacy in this series that is a method rather than a body of work or an institution.

Consistent with the whole configuration — the inclined plane, the telescope, the pendulum are all ways of making the unmeasurable measurable. The advice omits the second half of his method, which was to publish the measurement where the people who disagreed could not ignore it, and that half is what cost him his freedom.

Wanted to put Galileo on your radar, with the caveat that he has been dead since 1642 and spent his final decade forbidden from receiving visitors.
Short version: a mathematics lecturer and part-time instrument maker who heard about a Dutch spyglass, built a better one, and within a year had found moons around Jupiter and a court job in Florence. He then spent twenty years publishing, in Italian, arguments the Church had told him not to make — and was tried, forced to recant, and confined for life. He wrote his best book under house arrest.
Why it's worth your time: he is the series' clearest case of distribution as strategy. Newton had the bigger ideas; Galileo understood that an idea published for everyone cannot be un-published. Bring him the thing the incumbents say is impossible and a way to show it to the public.
